[2007-11-09] PAG Model-Data Fusion Workshop, February 18-20,2008 in Sanya, Hainan, China

Pacific Arctic Group (PAG) Model-Data Fusion Workshop
February 18-20, 2008
Sanya, Hainan, China

Sponsors: NOAA, PRIC/NSFC, and IARC/NSF

Perspective

The workshop will bring together modelers and observationalists from the PAG countries to discuss the present status of ocean modeling, identify opportunities for sharing capabilities and/or exchange of scientists, and identify ways in which modeling can contribute to the PAG synthesis planned for 2010 as a contribution to the International Polar Year (IPY).  The emphasis will be on models that depict the PAG region, specifically the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort seas and the deep basins to the north. The workshop will focus on modeling and data assimilation with support and guidance from field observationalists. The workshop will produce recommendations on the coordinated observation and modeling approaches during and beyond IPY in the Pacific sector of the Arctic Ocean.

Background:
The IPY kicked off in March 2007 with a series of coordinated field campaigns in the Arctic Ocean. At the same time, various modeling projects are being conducted in the Bering, Chukchi and Beaufort Seas by scientists from the Pacific Arctic Group (PAG) countries (Canada, China, Korea, Japan, Russia and the U.S.). Thus, a timely workshop can encourage modelers to work more closely with each other and with observationalists. The workshop should aid further development of modeling and data assimilation during the rest of IPY (through March 2009).

Objectives:
The objectives of this workshop are to

  1. promote discussion of preliminary modeling results from physical, biological, and coupled models, and from model-data comparison
  2. improve awareness of physical and biological measurements taken before  and after the start of the IPY (March 2007) in the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas.
  3. identify the major observational needs to support current modeling and data assimilation capabilities, and encourage collaboration between observationalists and modelers from the PAG countries during the IPY
  4. identify possible contributions from the modeling community to the PAG synthesis of 2010
  5. stimulate longer-lasting collaborations among modeling teams and between modelers and observationalists

Workshop Themes:

  1. Modeling of physical and ecosystem processes with model-data fusion studies
  2. Data assimilation using measurements being collected by PAG during the IPY
  3. Measurements of physical and ecosystem variables and processes using in-situ and satellite measurements, including historical data rescue and analyses

Basic Agenda:

Day One

Introduction and Purpose
Brief presentations by attendees designed to inform others of on-going activities
Group dinner

Day Two

Brief presentations continued if necessary
Organize sub-groups around themes identified by the group
Sub-groups meet in morning hours
Informal discussions and free thinking during one-half day excursion

Day Three

Sub-groups meet in morning hours
Plenary session in afternoon hours to hear reports from sub-groups and determine overall recommendations and ideas for follow-up activities

Locations: Sanya City, Hainan Province (Island), China: Beautiful second largest island of China with sub-tropical weather, so-called the China’s Hawaii and China’s last frontier. The winter is a golden season. The local host is the Polar Research Institute of China (PRIC).

Time: February 18-20 2008, just after the Chinese New Year (Spring Festival), after the NSF proposal submission deadline and before the Ocean Sciences Meeting.  The workshop should be concluded in time for preliminary results to be presented at the ASSW meeting in late March, 2008, and to be reported to next PAG meeting in Russia.
